Towards the end of my final year at university I didn’t really have much of an idea of what I wanted to do career wise. ‘I want to be an IT Consultant when I’m older’ wasn’t something I grew up saying. I looked around at various career options and consulting sounded more challenging, interesting and varied than the other options available to me. Accenture work with the top businesses in the world, and some really exciting clients. There was also a high possibility of travel, which caught my attention.
The training was intense but ultimately more relaxed than I was expecting – which suited me fine. And the people were all very smart – you go from thinking you’re one of the best at University to realising that you’re now working and in the same boat as 50 or so other exceptional people.
I’m never bored here and the time goes so quickly. Typically I’ll work from 9am to 6.30pm. Since joining Accenture I’ve worked on only one project, but in two different roles. The first role was a more functional, high-level design role, where I was responsible for designing brand new areas of the solution, consulting with clients on the best approach and then helping the build teams understand the full workings of the design. My second and current role is more technical. I am now getting into fixing workflow issues, which is challenging but very interesting.
From my experience, how you communicate complex information is key to your success here. What is the problem, why is it a problem, what does it impact, and how can it be fixed? These are questions you need to constantly think about. You need to be clear, concise and efficient with language but know how to tailor your style to different people. For example, you may need to communicate the same issue that you would do to a native English speaker in London, to a technical team member in India. You’ve also got to be able to manage your time effectively or things will pile up.
You’ll find we’re quite a competitive bunch. After all, I’m assessed against what my peers are doing so I can’t sit back. You do need to push yourself. But you quickly get used to it and you’ll soon find that the system motivates you more and helps you get better at what you do, without too much pressure.
